Sue Ellen and I heard about Rik's passing to Glory just today.

I knew Rik from our time at Abundant Life and from the time we spent working together at two different companies. How you saw him at church is how he was at work. I never saw him swerve from his Christian walk.

He is the one person who truly felt like a Christian brother to me. He always had the time to talk to me or my family whenever we met.

The world has lost a bit of love, kindness, and laughter with his passing.

While I am grateful for every member of our great congregation, there are a few who forever remain pillars of this church. Rik is among those who built the foundation- whether it was running sound, handling IT, or teaching a class— he was always the definition of faithful. Knowledgeable. Flexible. Generous. Teachable.

And most of all, as many others have said, he was just a kind, loving guy.

He remained steadfast in his faith- the Word of God he loved so much and taught so well, sustained him through this battle. And now, he is hearing the words “well done good and faithful servant!” I’m sure all of Heaven is giving him a standing ovation as he enters his forever home.

We know Heaven is richer, but we are certainly feeling the loss here on earth. Lori, you are a shining example of what is to love and stand in faith through the best and the worst. We know your heart is broken and that Rik has always been your first and only love. We will continue to join and support you and your family through this new journey. Pastor John and I love you and miss your great husband deeply.

Dear Lori & family,
I got to know Rik when I took How to Study the Word back in 1996. He was a “regular guy” who was so much more than that. I was struck by his calm demeanor and his good naturedness. He took very seriously his role as an instructor of the most fundamental and necessary subject that would empower me to better understand and put to practical use the Word of God in my life. He was always approachable, always upbeat, and always with a sense of humor. I got to know him better when we roomed together in Kenya. I have a vivid memory of him carrying a Bible in one hand and a hammer in the other as he went off to help build a school. How appropriate! I enjoyed our times skiing, riding motorcycles and just talking. I remember seeing him in the back section at ALCC with one of the grandkids, the “mom” bag and he was glowing! He was a gentle soul and a great man who impacted my life and for that I am truly and forever grateful.

Lori, I'm saddened by Rick's departure. I enjoyed the classes he taught at ALCC. He was such a blessing and I enjoyed fellowship with him, he had such a calm demeanor and a heart for God I will never forget!

Lori and family,
Michelle and I are deeply saddened by Rik's departure. From taking our first class at ALCF to having Rik pass the baton to one of his favorite classes to me as his successor at ALI, he was always a big part of our growth, and showed himself true to his beliefs as a living example. Regrettably we aren't able to attend his going home celebration, but will be there in spirit and prayer. We love you and pray the peace of God's presence and the comfort of His Word accompany you through the days, months, and years to come as you transition through this.
