What a wonderful lady! Rina was my secretary at Salem Hyde School for eight years. She was the beloved Mrs. Shea to everyone: students, parents, staff and community people with whom she daily came in contact. The parents and students especially saw Rina as their Salem Hyde grandmother who would watch over them and keep the pupils there safe. Rina did not just sit in the office doing her expected duties, she regularly attended programs, chaperoned our annual sixth grade trip to Toronto and showered love on the boys and girls. One story that has to be told involves Clyde Terry who was a frequent visitor to our office, often not for the best of reasons. Rina had a way with him that was amazing. One day a new student who had not learned that Rina was special was in the office when Clyde was there. This new student said some bad things to Rina and Clyde stepped right out and said to this clearly misguided young man in a way that left no doubt about what Clyde thought, and I will never forget this, "Don't ever mess with that woman again!"
Rina was my friend and counsellor. All by herself she deftly managed a school of 500 children, over 60 staff, hundreds of parents and others, two years of unsettling renovation and most importantly found her way into my heart and the hearts of so many others. Her loving, quiet manner will always be with us and her memory will live on in the hearts of all the Salem Hyde community who loved her and the beautiful person she was.
