Rose Marie (Nami) Marotta's Obituary
Rose Marie (Nami) Marotta, 90, of Syracuse, NY passed away peacefully at the Upstate University Medical Center on Sunday, November 20, 2016 from Alzheimer's disease.
Rose was born to the late Peter and Michelina Nami in Syracuse in 1926. She worked in the family business, The Willis Ave. Market, as a young girl, teenager and new mom after getting married. After graduating from Vocational High School, Rose worked as a secretary at Aetna Insurance agency.
In September of 1948, Rose married Salvatore Marotta of Solvay and they began their 67 years of marriage. She took care of their two children, Donald and Katherine and worked full time while Don and Kathy were small at R.E. Dietz for several years. She then became a full time mom and later worked as a secretary with the City of Syracuse in the Urban Renewal Department for over 20 years.
She was an exceptional seamstress making many outfits for Kathy and herself including formal dresses such as Kathy's senior prom gown. Rose also crocheted beautiful afghans including afghans for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her embroidery skills were second to none and family members and friends cherished receiving pillow cases, and other items. She and Sam enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, especially west of the Mississippi to Texas and California. Rose was a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary and the Altar and Rosary Society at St Vincent de Paul Church where she was a parishioner.
Rose was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore (Sam); her parents; nephew and Godson, Stephen Nami; her brother's wife, Dorothy Nami and Sam's sisters, Rose Zagarella and Lillian Pederson; his brothers, Joseph, Michael, Philip and Umberto (Bert) Marotta and their spouses as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was extremely proud of her grandsons currently serving or served in the United States Marine Corps., Matthew, Andrew and Anthony.
Rose is survived by her son, Donald (Judy Walsh); daughter, Katherine Marzec (Michael); grandsons: Jeffrey Marotta, Anthony Marotta (Sharion), Matthew Marotta (Malinda) and Andrew Marzec; great-grandchildren, Anthony Jr., Sophia Rose, Matthew Jr., Mason, and Mary Susan Marotta; her brother, Ottavio (Tavio) Nami, Sam’s sister, Geraldine Zoanetti, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call at the THOMAS J. PIRRO, JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd., (corner of Buckley Road) North Syracuse on Sunday, November 27, 2016 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. A funeral mass in celebration of Rose Marie’s life will be held at 9:30 AM on Monday, November 28, 2016 in St Vincent de Paul Church, 342 Vine Street, Syracuse. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery.
