Back in the 1970's Sarah and Wally and my parents were good friends, Roseann and Sue were the same age as my brother, and we saw quite a bit of them. When I was 15 Sarah taught me how to drive (my father didn't have the patience and my mother didn't know how). For about a year, Sarah and I spent every Saturday together. I chauffeured her around town running errands to the commissary on the base and whatever else she needed to accomplish.
Not only was she a patient and calm driving teacher, but she was also the first person who actually treated me as an adult. We had long conversations about anything and everything and she treated me with intelligence and respect and made me feel very good about myself; something every 15 year old boy needs, especially me at that time.
I'll always remember those Saturdays and our conversations. It's been many, many years since I saw Sarah. I hope that I was smart enough at the time to express my gratitude for those life and driving lessons. If not, I'd like to do so now.
My sincerest condolences to Roseann and Sue.
