Suzanne (Carroway) Berti's Obituary
Suzanne (Carroway) Berti, 51, of Cicero, passed away Friday, January 1, 2016 following a courageous battle with inflammatory breast cancer. The cancer may have destroyed her body, but her strength, humor, and support for those around her never faded. Sue’s life was full of love, passion, and continual thirst for mischief and adventure. Sue loved to have family over for Sunday dinners, some wine, humor, and great conversation. Sue’s wit was quick and laughter infectious. As an amazing cook, Sue found great pleasure in planning, preparing, and feeding all who joined her. Sue was fiercely loyal and protective of her family and friends, encouraging them, celebrating them for their accomplishments, birthdays, as well as keeping us all in line. Sue was an amazing gardener and often said, “There cannot be too many flowers.” Hundreds of blooms could be seen outdoors, with cut flowers spread throughout the house. Sue’s greatest accomplishment can be seen in her two children, Jordan and Jillian. She was an amazing mother and role model.
Sue earned degrees from Liverpool High School, Geneseo, and Oswego. An elementary and special education teacher at Roxboro Middle, Sue taught with passion, humor, and instilled a love for learning. Sue worked on extensive committees, was an executive cabinet member of the North Syracuse Education Association, and a trustee to the Northern Onondaga Public Library.
Sue is survived by her loving husband, Donald Berti; her two children, Jordan Berti (Amy Baranello) and Jillian Berti; her dogs, Jinger and Jeorgia; her parents, Peter and Monica H. (Boivin) Carroway; siblings, Tom Carroway, Katie Kuryla (John), and Chris Carroway; mother-in-law, Elsie Berti; brother-in-law, Jim Berti (Mary Ellen), and sister-in-law, Chris Schmidt (Will); eight nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Dr. Benjamin Himpler, the staff at HOA, and the caregivers at Crouse Hospital, 4 south.
A Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Sue’s life will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church, Syracuse. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dewitt. Family and friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial scholarship in Sue’s name is being established through the North Syracuse Dollars for Scholars, P.O. Box 5205, Syracuse, NY 13220.
