Seeing all of the memories posted from St. Rose & Grimes classmates, I also felt compelled to share my favorite memory of Bill from 1st grade at St. Rose.
Every day at recess for what seemed like forever, Billy and I would talk about football, and our favorite teams and players. One day, he came to school and handed me a package of NFL helmet stickers & said “I bought these for you.” It was so sweet and thoughtful, and I never forgot it. In fact, I still have my sticker book from childhood that contains those helmet stickers.
I haven’t seen Bill since 7th grade at Grimes, but I will have that memory for a lifetime. RIP, Bill.
What will certainly be remembered was Billy’s big heart and good energy. He provided many good laughs and was always so much fun to be around. I was fortunate to get to know him starting in Junior High at Bishop Grimes. He became a good friend and someone you always knew was giving his all. His career over the last 20 years shows his caring and leadership towards young people and students. I am grateful for the times I spent with Billy over the years and May God Bless him and his family. Rest In Peace and let your light live on!

Bill Cloonan was my first boyfriend I ever had and I wanted to share this memory:
Bill sold his football cards and got me a Dalmatian puppy with the money because he knew I was obsessed with Dalmatians at the time.
Who does that as a kid? Someone who had figured out their own way to show someone they care about them.
It’s been thirty years since we *went out* and my family will always remember this young boy and his grand gesture as a true representation of the kind of big heart that Bill had.
I’m grateful for the time I knew him.

I am very sorry for your loss. Billy was a great friend at St. Rose and Bishop Grimes. He added a lot of energy, positivity and joy to our lives as we were growing up, and was kind to everybody. I saw him as a fearless leader, starting with competitive kickball games during 3rd grade recess when he dove for balls while wearing dress pants and a tie, to when he led Coach Haven's team out of St. Anthony's gym with an improbable basketball win in sixth grade, to his captaining of the under resourced high school football team. I have great respect for his commitment to coaching and mentoring for the past 20+ years, and know that he had a positive impact on so many young students. I feel fortunate to have known Billy, and will cherish our friendship.

Cloonan family, it has been a while since I have seen many of you and I am terribly sorry for your loss.
I have nothing but good memories of the time I got to spend with Bill. He was always someone that I wanted to be around, whether we were kicking field goals at the park, playing catch or just sitting and talking. He had away of making you feel comfortable and included.
I remember riding my bike miles to go hang out with him, no plans, we just enjoyed each other’s friendship and being around each other.
I consider myself lucky to have had Bill in my life growing up. He was passionate about what he was into and his passion was infectious. He set an example for me, if you love something or someone you give all your effort.
I will miss his smile and his personality but I will forever cherish our friendship.
